The measurement of the degree of adhesion of a coating represents one of the very important factors to guarantee the durability and resistance of the coating, whether protective or embellishment. Furthermore, in the case of coatings with an insulation or protection function, it is mandatory to carry out the adhesion test to guarantee effective protection against corrosion. For an optimal result, the coatings must adhere to the substrates on which they are applied.

There are three different methods to evaluate the resistance of a paint to the substrate where it has been applied:

• The first method is the Cross Hatch Test or also called cross hatching carried out with a blade block to cut the coating up to the substrate. The method consists in making at least two cuts that intersect at 90° in order to obtain a metric grid composed of small squares of different sizes depending on the version of Quadretor used (ISO2409 Specifications). Subsequently, the cut area is visually observed to ascertain any failure in adhesion.
• The second method of testing coating adhesion is to use a "stylus or loop" stylus to which an increasing amount of weight is applied until the coating is removed from the substrate.
• The third method is the "Pull Off Adhesion tester" and consists of measuring the amount of pressure necessary to detach a precise portion of coating with the traction method. A platform (Dolly) of specific dimensions (according to ISO 4624) is glued to the surface of the covering, after the glue has hardened, a mechanical or automatic traction apparatus connected to the measuring device is aligned and hooked to the Dolly to apply the traction perpendicular to the test surface. The applied force is gradually increased and monitored until the coating material detaches from the substrate.

The ARW-T05A Automatic Pull-off Tester is a digital instrument used to measure the degree of adhesion of a coating using the pull-off method. The method consists of detecting the force required to extract a specified test diameter of the coating from its substrate using hydraulic pressure. The pressure is displayed on a digital LCD and represents the adhesion strength of the coating to the substrate.
